Well, looks like it’s time to dust off this disused old thing and get back on the horse. Or something like that. I’m ready to double the number of posts and updates this year compared to what I made last year. Which if I write a second post, will do just that. But enough housekeeping. On to my main topic.

Commissioning a symbol

I have long wanted an icon, a sigil, a coat of arms of sorts, some symbol I can use to represent myself in various online spaces and in my personal work. I am no visual artist myself, so I knew I was not up to the task. But, there’s this cool thing you can do where you give a series of prompts, a description of what you want to see, and an image is generated for you. It’s almost magic. People have been doing it for thousands of years. It’s called commissioning an artist. Did you know this was a thing you could do? It’s true. You should try it.

The artist in question for this case is Helvetica Blanc(you should go look at their stuff, like now, because it’s so good), a dear friend of mine and kindred soul whom I knew would be able to nail my idea. And nail it they did, in pretty much one go.

A sigil, black line work on a green circle. The sigil consists of a triangle with a stylized letter J through the center of it, resulting in the cross of the J making a letter A with the triangle.

I won’t go into all the myriad ways this fits me so well, but they managed to come up with something that incorporated my initials, my favorite shape and is very simple while still containing so much depth. I especially love the three little Tolkien-esque dots. Expect to see this symbol used all over the place, starting with the home page and with my signature on posts and stories.

Art on the body

I also recently got a new tattoo (my second, and hopefully not last) and it turned out even better than I had hoped:

A photo of a forearm with a black and white tattoo. The tattoo is of a heraldic lion holding a fountain pen.

I went to an artist that my partner found online and whose style and portfolio I really liked. I have always liked images of lions and they have always been a symbol that really resonates with me, so I knew this needed to be my next tattoo. Once again, you can just talk to an artist and give them your request and then they will make you an art. It’s that easy. Oh also pay for the art. Artists need to be paid for their work.

Personal work

I have been working on a few pieces of short fiction (one of which is going up along with this post), and I’m hoping to upload them soon. I also have been noodling with a video game idea, and I may write some posts where I talk a little bit about the design process or some of the ideas. Who knows.

Anyway, until next time: go pay an artist to make you an art! You won’t regret and you’ll have a nice art as a reward.
