I really meant to do more in-depth reviews this year of the different books I read, but this year very much got away from me. So instead, here is a list of the different books I’ve read in 2024, in no particular order, and a one line review of my thoughts if I remember anything about it.
- Good Morning, Midnight: A poignant if depressing little book about the end of the world and who is left to witness it. It’s about connection and regrets.
- Bookshops and Bonedust: This is the sequel/prequel to Legends and Lattes and it was very much of the same but in all the right ways. This book continues the cozy fantasy vibes throughout and introduces new characters that are every bit as lovable and endearing as the first book.
- Can’t Spell Treason with Tea: Another cozy fantasy book, this one filled with magic and some rather good worldbuilding. The sapphic love story at the center of the book is charming and sweet.
- The House in the Cerulean Sea: A wonderful twist on the “magical children orphanage” genre, this is a very gay love story that is all about loving and accepting yourself so you can love and accept others, about being comfortable in your own skin, and being unapologetically you.
- Leviathan’s Wake, Caliban’s War, Abbaddon’s Gate: I read the first Expanse book a long time ago, but had never read the rest, so I reread it and then read the subsequent two. Just good, fun sci-fi.
- Piranesi: A strange, precise story about being lost but finding yourself despite the loss. Weird and beautiful and haunting in the same way that abandoned spaces are.
Those are all the ones I can remember. It’s more books than I read in 2023, so I’m trending in the right direction. In this past month, I started reading the Aenid and the Divine Comedy, as I’m trying to catch up on classics I’ve never read or I haven’t read since I was a kid and didn’t appreciate or understand.
Now, happy new year and may it be full of books and reading.
